Arbor Week Events

The Santa Maria City Council will declare the week of March 7th through March 14th as “Arbor Week” at its meeting on Tuesday, March 7th. In celebration of Arbor Week, the Recreation and Parks Department plans three school presentations, each consisting of a tree-planting and a lecture for students about the importance and benefits of trees.

The first presentation takes place on Wednesday, March 8th at Jimenez Elementary School (1970 Biscayne Street) at 1:30 p.m. On Friday, March 10th, other presentations will take place at Battles Elementary School (605 East Battles Road) at 9:00 a.m. and at Oakley Elementary School (1120 West Harding Avenue) at 1:30 p.m.

The City’s tree canopy consists of over 45,000 trees through various easements. Every residential and municipal facility property, major street and park has a tree-planting easement. The cycle for trimming is every five- to seven years with a four-man contracted crew. The City is a 32-year “Tree City USA” member. Tree City USA is a national organization committed to improving tree canopy vitality and keeping communities “green.”

Questions regarding “Arbor Week” and City trees may be directed to the Recreation and Parks Department at (805) 925-0951 extension 2260.
