City Council Selects Three District Elections Map Finalists,
Santa Maria remains on schedule to decide by May its future City Council district election map boundaries. This week, the Council agreed that the City will have four distinct districts for future City Council elections. Each district will include a portion of the Downtown Specific Plan, and the Mayor’s position will still be elected at-large by all voters.
The Council on Thursday chose its three preferred maps from the 17 submitted maps it had to review, through the lens of its preferred optional criteria which included State and Federal laws.
The Council’s preferred maps can be found on the City’s district elections webpage at www.cityofsantamaria.org/districtelections.
The next step in the process will be a fourth public hearing at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2nd at the Minami Community Center, 600 W. Enos Street, followed by another public hearing at 6:30 pm. Tuesday, May 16th at the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center, 605 S. McClelland Street.
The City Council on February 21st launched the process to convert its elections from the current at-large voting system to a district-based process. The City anticipates the process to be completed no later than the end of May 2017. As proposed, the first district-based election is to be held in 2018, when two City Council seats will be up for election, followed in 2020 by the remaining two district seats and the Mayor’s position.
